The Machynys Peninsula is a designated SSSI and is home to a wide variety of protected flora and fauna. Once it was home to a monastery and the "mad monks of Machynys" are still reputed to haunt the nearby Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and Spa! A footpath meanders along the edge of the golf links and skirts the peninsular. It is a very peaceful getaway and you are guaranteed to spot unusual birds as the wetlands are rich in duck, geese, skylarks, swans, kestrels and other birds of prey. Rabbits abound in the evenings and also otters and watervoles are seen in the ditches.
