Merthyr Mawr is an idyllic little village set about 2.5 miles outside of Bridgend. With an outstandingly beautiful collection of thatched cottages all surrounding a village green it is like a place straight out of a novel. The cottages retain an authentic, traditional feel with thatched roofs and well maintained gardens. It really is a peaceful step back in time when you visit this little village. The name Merthyr Mawr (Great Tombs) is named after the large Stone Age burial complexes that lay buried beneath the millions of tons of sand on the dunes that now cover them.
