All that remains of this once important Norman Castle above the River Monnow is the Great Tower and Hall. Built about 1150, the Great Tower was the birthplace of the future Henry V in September 1387. The Earl of Lancaster built the single storey Hall in the late 13th Century for the holding of courts, and it was used until the 17th Century. A large round keep once stood where the Great Castle House now stands, but it was pulled down in 1647 during the Civil War.
