Neath Abbey dates from the year 1130 and is an extraordinary complex of medieval monastic ruins, the substantial remains of a grand Tudor residence, and fragments of 18th Century industrial copper furnaces. Cistercian monks enjoyed a quiet existence for over 400 years here. The walls of their Abbey have remained standing to a good height. One remarkable chamber of the monastery has survived almost intact. Two chapel altars, a rare stone handrail set above the remains of the monks’ night stairs and some medieval floor tiles have also survived.
