The castle at Newcastle Emlyn, South Wales, dates from the 13th Century. It consists of two wards; a steep earthwork now separates the outer and inner wards. This earthwork is a gun emplacement of mid 17th Century constructed to defend the castle during the civil war. The gatehouse, added in the 14th Century and the south tower are what remain of the original structure. There is a dungeon on the left hand side as you enter through the gatehouse.
