Newport Castle was built in the 14th Century and was extensively destroyed by Owain Glyndwr. The remains stand on the banks of the river Usk surrounded by main roads and the railway line and is largely unappreciated. However, there is a walkway that runs through the remaining stone castle that enables visitors to gain some of an impression of what the castle must have been like before it was so badly destroyed. Perhaps the best view of the castle is from the town bridge from where the two octagonal towers of the castle can be seen.
