Pen y Fan, which lies about four and three-quarter miles south of Brecon is the highest point on the Brecon Beacons at 2907 feet above sea level. It forms a double summit with Corn Du at 2863 feet, half a mile to the south-west. This distinctive summit is a notable landmark for many miles around and is a popular target for visitors. A commonly used and safe route is to start directly for the summit from the Pont ar Daf layby on the A470 main Merthyr Tydfil-Brecon road returning via Corn Du to rejoin the road at the Storey Arms pub.
