One of the most visited megalithic sites in Wales, Pentre Ifan is an impressive Neolithic burial chamber with an enormous capstone precariously balanced on three uprights, situated three miles south-east of Newport. The capstone is nearly 17 feet long and is said to weigh over 16 tons! Perched on a hilltop above the Nevern valley with stunning views of both Fishguard Bay and the Preseli Mountains, this monument dates from around 4000 B.C. What the visitor sees today are the remains of a dolmen type chambered tomb which would have been used for communal burials.
