St. David’s Church stands almost in the shadow of the great priory of Llanthony which lies in the remote Vale of Ewyas, eight miles north of Abergavenny. St. David built a chapel here in the 6th Century which was found in ruins by William de Lacy at the end of the 11th Century. Together with Erinius, Queen Maude’s chaplain, he built the first church in 1103 before the work on the Augustinian priory commenced. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the main buildings fell into ruin but the church alongside continued and remains, though substantially rebuilt.
