The site of St Michael’s Church has been a centre of Christian worship for a thousand years or more. The present Norman church dates from the 13th Century. The chancel was at one time separated from the nave by a rood screen, but the only remaining trace of its presence is a rood window. The rood screen would have been vividly coloured and much gilt used in its ornament. Together with the medieval wall paintings of which there are still traces, it must have made an indelible impact on the peasant parishioners.
