St Woolos Cathedral dates back to the 12th Century but is built on a site that has been a place of worship since the 6th Century when Prince Gwynllyw built a mud and wattle church here. The present building is of Norman origin and the arched entrance and the arcaded nave date from this time. The church was heavily restored in the Victorian era and was designated a cathedral in 1921 which led to its enlargement in 1960. The window at the east end of the cathedral was designed by John Piper.
