The town of Neyland owes a great debt of thanks to Brunel for putting it on the map, and providing work and prosperity for the area. The choice of Neyland as the terminus of the Great Western Railway, was entirely that of Brunel, who is regarded as the founder of the town. To show its appreciation, the townspeople raised £30,000 to commission a statue of the great man. This now stands proudly at Brunel Quay, on the site of the old railway station, having been unveiled by H.R.H. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, on the 23rd July 1999.
