The Black Mountains are the most easterly of the Brecon Beacons. They are a protected wildlife site and home to many rare plants and animals including the red grouse. Generations of hill farmers have grazed the hardy brown shaggy cattle, sheep and Welsh mountain ponies here. Sheep grazing remains the most important form of local agriculture. The terrain can be quite rough with heathland loved by skylarks. Also the weather here can change quite rapidly so make sure you are adequately prepared.
