Ysgyryd Fawr is also known as the Skirrid and it is the most easterly of the three dominant peaks around Abergavenny. On the western slopes there is a landslip and, according to legend, the mountain was torn in two at the time of Christ`s crucifixion. The remains of St Michael`s Chapel lie on the 486 metre summit, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The mountain is easily climbed from a car park on the B4521, about three miles east of Abergavenny.
