This is the oldest museum in Britain; in fact when it was first opened in 1683 the term ‘museum’ was hardly in common usage. The institution is owned by the University of Oxford and first began as an eclectic mix of natural history and human artefacts. However through the centuries the museum expanded and found more focus, developing separate history, natural history and artefact galleries as well as an excellent art gallery. The museum is now one of the best respected in the world and has an amazing permanent collection and often hosts visiting exhibits.
