John de Balliol founded the college in 1283 under the guidance of the Bishop of Durham. The institution has a long history of extremely political active students and has produced several British Prime Ministers and other world leaders. The college has more international students than any other undergraduate college. It was in the nineteenth century under the leadership of Benjamin Jowett that the college rose to fame, pioneering the ‘tutorial’ style of education that was quickly adopted by the rest of the Oxbridge colleges.
