Still situated in its original location, Exeter College was founded in 1314 by Walter de Stapeldon of Devon, the Bishop of Exeter. The college was originally intended for the education of clergy and was known as Stapledon Hall immediately after its foundation. It was in the fifteenth century that the college grew significantly, broadening its curriculum and the beautiful chapel was constructed. Until 1978 the college was male owner, but in 1993 the Exeter became the first former all-male institution in the university to elect a woman as head.
