Evidence of mankind roaming Greenham Common has been found dating back to Prehistoric times. With the arrival of cruise missiles in the 1980s, and subsequently anti-nuclear peace protesters, Greenham Common became famous worldwide. Now the cruise missiles have gone. Since 2000 Greenham Common has been restored as common land with unrestricted public access, making it a haven for wildlife and outdoor activity enthusiasts. In 2002 a site featuring a water feature and a camp fire sculpture was built in New Greenham Park to commemorate the peace camp.
