A stirring sculpture of the British lion with the helmets of the fallen adorns the memorial to those lost in two world wars. Behind it you see the stately Georgian Guildhall. It was designed by Sir Robert Taylor and impresses mainly by sheer size. In the hall is an Elizabethan chimneypiece rescued from an earlier guildhall which was destroyed by fire. The Guildhall is now a venue for a wide variety of events, often in the fine banqueting hall.
