John Halle was a wealthy clothier who was elected mayor of Salisbury four times and was Salisbury’s MP. He defended the rights of its citizens against their overlord the Bishop of Salisbury with such vigour that he offended the king and was imprisoned for a time. He built this house in 1470. It was carefully restored in the 19th Century and is now the very grand foyer of the Odeon Cinema. In Victorian times it was a china shop.
