Originally run by Presbyterians, the college began life as Manchester Academy in 1786. The college was one of the few remaining dissenting academies that provided religious nonconformists with education. At the time, nonconformists were denied admission in Oxford and Cambridge. The Manchester Academy, however, made religious its key principle. The college changed location five times before settling in Oxford. It became a official college in 1996 and remains the universities newest colleeg and the only one that accepts exclusively mature students.
