This imposing coastal fortress was completed in 1544 by Henry VIII to protect the narrow Solent entrance. Extended during the Napoleonic wars, the castle was manned again during World War II when modern gun emplacements and searchlights were installed. Charles I was held here briefly before his execution in London in 1649. The attraction is now managed by English Heritage. Access is possible on foot via a 1.5 mile stretch of shingle. Alternatively, a regular ferry service runs from Keyhaven.
