The impressive statue of King Alfred the Great has stood over Winchester since 1901 when it was erected to commemorate his death 1000 years before. The inscription on the statue reads “To the Founder of the Kingdom and Nation, Winchester and the English name”. When he was on the throne he ruled most of England and Winchester was indeed his capital. He died in Winchester and was buried there until his body was moved to Hyde Abbey.
