Just inside St Ann’s Gate is this fascinating house built right into the wall of the close. Originally there was a house here for one of the cathedral canons. The present building displays the wealth of the Harris family, who settled here in 1660, and whose descendants became the Earls of Malmesbury. It remains a family home, so the splendid interior can be seen only by appointment. But any passer-by can admire the Georgian sundial on the wall facing the North Walk, inscribed "Life is but a walking shadow".
