Butcher Row developed from a row of market stalls. Over the Middle Ages traders gradually replaced their stalls with a strip of shops facing Butcher Row on one side and the Market Square on the other. That is why the pub has no garden. Instead patrons can enjoy the sun at tables set out in the Market Square. When the pub was first granted a licence in 1742, it was known as the Mitre. After several changes of name, it became the Market Inn from 1875.
