Matron’s College
39-46 The Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP1 - England, UK

Map
This appealing building is part of Salisbury’s heritage of care. It was founded in 1682 by Bishop Seth Ward to house twelve widows of clergy, which it still does. Over the entrance is the royal arms and a Latin inscription recording the bishop’s charity. There has been speculation that Sir Christopher Wren played a part in its design. He had been taught by Ward at Oxford and advised the bishop on the cathedral fabric.
