Visitors to the village of Mere in Wiltshire are sometimes surprised by the scale of the ancient fortification of Mere Castle that dominates the community. The top of the battlements can be reached via a steep climb up hundreds of steps. The site today has been given over mostly to a number of nature trails that radiate out from the highest point, which is marked with a monument. Some spectacular views can be seen from the top of Mere Castle.
