The massive Iron Age hillfort of Old Sarum (Old Salisbury) was reused by the Romans, Saxons and Normans, before growing into one of the most flourishing settlements in medieval England. This fascinating and dramatic site contains the ruins of a castle, Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. From the Iron Age ramparts there are fine views of the surrounding countryside, an ideal spot for a picnic. A guidebook and souvenirs are available from the on-site shop.
