Oxford Castle was founded after the Norman invasion and first became a prison in the 13th Century although the main buildings date from the 1770s. The prison closed in 1996 and was used occasionally as a film or television location. It has now been completely renovated and converted into a leisure quarter in the heart of Oxford city. The main prison building has been converted into a hotel and is surrounded by a varied collection of bars, cafés, restaurants and galleries to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. Oxford Castle Unlocked, open in May 2006, gives an insight into the history of the city and its castle, bringing the history of the ancient buildings to life. Oxford castle is across the road from the Westgate shopping centre car park and within walking distance of Oxford railway station.
