Portchester Castle’s origins are Roman with much of the present building dating from the early 12th century, since when its history has been synonymous with Britain’s struggles with France.
Captured by the French in 1215 during the barons' rebellion against King John, the castle was used for munitions storage during the Hundred Years War and was Henry V’s departure point for Agincourt in 1415. Its strategic importance declined in favour of Portsmouth but the French connection was revived during the Napoleonic Wars when prisoners of war were held there.
