Portchester Castle started life as a Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ fort and visitors can still see the multi-towered walls which are among the most complete in Northern Europe. Standing high above the Solent, the fortress became a Norman castle in the 12th century when a tower-keep was built in one corner. Portchester was an important staging post during the Hundred Years War and in 1415 Henry V departed from here before the Battle of Agincourt. On a clear day, there are fine views across to Portsmouth, Southsea and Hayling Island.

Wow, this castle seems to have it all. A great location and great views across Portsmouth Harbour and a history to match. I wandered around this fortification and wondered just how long it took to build such a thing, fortunately there are lots of really helpful descriptive information boards all around the castle to help people like me with lots of questions. Great day out.
