This is one of the oldest fortifications in Portsmouth and was built around 1418 in order to defend the entrance to the main historic harbour from raids by French ships. Inside the fortress, there is an impressive brick ceiling that is thought to date from the early 19th Century. Amazingly the fortress was still used until after the Second World War, making for an important defensive point during the major conflicts of the 20th Century.
