Often referred to as Domus Dei, the Royal Garrison Church was built in 1212 as an almshouse and hospital by Pierre des Roches, the Bishop of Worcester. The church was the scene of great controversy after seamen murdered a bishop giving a service in 1450, resulting in the entire town of Portsmouth being excommunicated until 1508. Sadly much of the property was destroyed during a German bombing raid in 1941, but even without its roof, the church remains a popular attraction.
