There were Baptists in Salisbury from the 17th Century and in 1719 they built themselves a meeting house on this site. Pastor Philip Saffery founded a Sunday School in 1792. Children were taught to read, so that they could read the Bible. The chapel was rebuilt in his time with a schoolroom attached. However the present chapel and school are the result of another rebuilding in the 1880s to the design of John Stent of Warminster.
