Southsea Castle was built as part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around the coast of England to protect against the many aggressive navies of Europe at that time. The castle was strengthened and modified throughout the centuries to provide an even more effective point of defence. The local council have acquired the castle and restored it to its former 19th Century glory, allowing visitors to see what it would have looked like as a place of military activity back then.
