For fans of rowing Southsea Rowing Club is one of the oldest such clubs on the south coast. In the early 19th Century gentlemen challenged one another to rowing championships in the Solent but by 1839 a Portsmouth Southsea Gosport Regatta for Amateur Fours had been established. Around 1850 the club changed its name to the Fowles Rowing Club and ten years later adopted Southsa Rowing Club at its current location on Clarence Esplanade. Clubmembers take part in regular rowing challenges set by the club.
