The Square Tower is a surviving part of the original fortifications built for Portsmouth in 1494, in fact it is one of the only parts that still remains from this time. Originally the building would have been a bunker for the governor of the town when the area was under attack, and was subsequently used as a gunpowder store for the Royal navy. The tower still retains many original Tudor features.
