Although most of the present structure of the parish church of St John the Baptist in New Alresford dates back to the Victorian era, there has been a church on the site since at least the Norman Conquest as it is recorded in the Domesday Book. The tower is the oldest part of the church and, above the door, there is a Saxon rood which is a sculpture of Jesus on the cross. The churchyard is also of historic interest as it holds the graves of four French Napoleonic prisoners of war and one of their wives.
