With origins dating back to the 12th Century, St Nicholas boasts a tower of Berkshire brick built in 1612. Inside, the Elizabethan chancel screen carries the Royal Arms, and the Jacobean pulpit once played host to Reading-born William Laud who became Archbishop of Canterbury before being beheaded in 1644 for his support of Charles I, absolute monarchy and his religious hardline. In the churchyard lies Thomas Dundas (1758-1841), who served under Nelson at Trafalgar as captain of HMS Naiad, and members of the Simonds family, founders of the local brewery.
