St. Nicholas Church is a magnificent 16th Century building built by the famous cloth maker Jack O’Newbury and his son. St. Nicholas is situated in the heart of Newbury and dates back to the 16th Century. The enormous church was used in the 1st Battle of Newbury as a hospital, prison and stable by Cromwell’s troops. Inside the church are a lovely Jacobean pulpit and a font cover so huge it has to be lifted with a chained mechanism.
