This statue commemorates Prince Christian Victor, born in Windsor Castle just yards away from the monument. Christian was a member of the British royal family and was one of Queen Victoria's grandsons. He is noted in history as being one of the bravest of the royal soldiers. Although from a privileged family background, Christian insisted on fighting alongside his men and it was because of this insistence that he eventually met his death in the Sudan in 1900.
