The present building, now a restaurant and pub, dates from the 18th Century, but the mill’s history is much longer. Mills were generally rebuilt on the same site, carefully chosen to take best advantage of water flow. So it is likely that the mill owned by the Bishop of Old Sarum, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book, stood here even before the city was founded. It was rebuilt by the city’s founder, Bishop Richard Poore, and was known as the Bishop’s Mill until recently.
