Lying close to the Ridgeway prehistoric track-way, the White Horse of Uffington is believed to be Britain’s oldest hill figure. It is thought to date from around 1000BC in the late Bronze Age. The striking image is cut into the white chalk bedrock and shows a stylised horse. Many legends are associated with this ancient figure. One says that King Alfred had the figure cut from the turf in 871 after defeating the Danes. Another legend says that the figure is actually of the dragon killed by St. George.
