This handsome Georgian mansion was once the scene of shocking violence. In 1791 clothier Mr Phelps bought a new machine that workers feared would make them redundant. A mob assembled outside his house. Stones broke windows. Phelps fired on the mob, killing a man, woman and child. The house was later owned by Dr. Richard Bethell, whose son Richard became Lord Chancellor in 1861 with the title Baron Westbury. And so the house got its name.
