Wolvesey Castle is one of the greatest medieval ruins in Britain. It consists of a Norman stone keep and a bailey fortress and visitors can wander around its remains for free. The castle is also known as the Old Bishops Palace as it was once home to the Bishops of Winchester. In 1554 Queen Mary and Philip of Spain had their wedding breakfast in the East Hall of the castle. Its extensive ruins are now maintained by English Heritage and the site has disabled access.
