This was the last, and one of the most sophisticated pieces added to Henry VIII’s coastal defences; in fact, it was completed two years after his death in 1547. It was the first example of the ‘arrowhead’ artillery bastion to be built in England. There are a series of displays inside the castle that include atmospheric recreations of 16th Century rooms, and a display about the many shipwrecks that have occurred around these treacherous shores.
