Cairnholy, above Wigtown Bay near Dumfries, is the site of the remains of two impressive chambered cairns. Both have been heavily robbed, although the large stones forming the facade and chamber of Cairnholy I have been left, as have the portal and chamber stones of Cairnholy II. Cairnholy I measures some 45 metres long by 10 metres wide. Cairnholy II, on top of a small hillock measures 20 metres by 12 metres. Legend has it that this is the tomb of the mythical king Galdus.
