Drumlanrig Cycle Museum, situated within the old stableyard of the castle, has a superb collection of bicycles ranging from a replica of the original pedal-powered machine, an 1868 velocipede, several Victorian tricycles and penny farthings, early safety bicycles, a 1912 Dursley Pederson and a display of the progressions over the years up to the modern bicycle. In approximately 1839, local blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan, added foot operated treadles to cranks to turn the back wheel of a wooden hobby horse. Thereby producing the world’s first bicycle!

Our family visit to this castle allowed all four of us to enjoy our individual passions. Mine was a tour of another fine Scottish castle, this one made in the late 17th Century out of pink sandstone. My wife enjoyed the gardens and arts and crafts centre whilst my kids loved the chance to cycle around the grounds on mountain bikes they hired for the day. Wonderful stuff.
