Jedburgh Abbey, on the north bank of Jed Water, was founded as a priory by King David I in 1138 on the site of an earlier church dating as far back as at least 830 AD. By 1154, it had become an Augustinian abbey. Frequently damaged in the many skirmishes with the English and often rebuilt, In the 1540s, it was fortified and, since the number of monks had dwindled to a handful, became Jedburgh’s Parish Church in 1560. By 1878, a new church was built and the Abbey fell into disuse. It was restored by the Marquis of Lothian and came into State care in 1913.
