Visit this huge metallic ’open book’ memorial on the hillside above Langholm. It is dedicated to the poet Hugh McDiarmid, joint-founder of the Scottish National Party, and lover of Scotland. McDiarmid was a nationalist who admired Stalin (who was expelled from the Communist Party for his nationalism and refused entry into the Scottish National Party because of his Marxist views). Please note when visiting high ground in the region beware of low-flying jets.
